Spain: counter-terrorism report alerts about possible suicide attacks

La Gaceta:
"The process started months ago with the arrival of former Islamist prisoners of Guantanamo Bay. But we must add to that, the continued rise of Salafism as a doctrine which is gaining in significance throughout the Spanish geography. Moreover, the threat is seriously affected by the release of jihadist prisoners, not just those who have served time in Spain, but of those who are acquitted following their arrest for acts related to jihadist activity, "says a report by the responsible for fighting terrorism.
Those acquitted by the High Court the report refers to are Spanish national Gonzalo López Royo (aka "salaam1420", above) and Morocccan Fath Allah Sadaqa, arrested by the Guardia Civil after finding that these two men ennobled Islamic jihad over the Internet. The Third Division of the High Court, presided by Judge Alfonso Guevara and speaker Gregorio Ruiz Polanco, recognized as a fact that "the statements made by the two defendants were intended as a tribute to a Chechen guerrilla militant, devoting their website to all Muslims who die and suffer at the hands of the infidels, the desire to transform Spain again in Caliphate (and) their call for jihad and martyrdom (...) The accused Fath Allah Sadaqa uploaded to Youtube two videos, one with reference to three leaders of Al Qaeda, and another image of an attack against a U.S. vehicle in Iraq. "
The resolution of last June 21st, resolved to acquit both accused of "the crime of praising terrorism and contempt for the victims of terrorism with all the inherent favorable pronouncements such absolution has" .

Germany: Two ex-GITMO prisoners arrive after Germany-US agreement

A spokesman for the Hamburg government confirmed that Ahmed Mohammed al-Shurfa, a stateless man of Palestinian descent born in Saudi Arabia, had arrived in the northern German port city.

The spokesperson said that the 34-year-old would first be brought to a medical clinic, where he will be given an extensive check-up over the next few days. Officials said the goal was to help reintegrate the former prisoner into society, with the hope that he will ultimately become self-sufficient. The Americans arrested al-Shurfa in Afghanistan in 2001 and he has been imprisoned at Guantanamo since 2002.

Later on Thursday, a second former Guantanamo prisoner -- 36-year-old Mahmoud Salim al-Ali of Syria -- arrived in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in central-western Germany, an official with the state's Interior Ministry said. "According to our knowledge, he does not pose any threat," a spokesman said. "We haven't brought a sleeper into our country," he said, referring to the phenomenon of potential terrorists like the 9/11 celll that infiltrate society and appear to be normal residents before they are activated.

'Humanitarian Reasons'

Earlier this year, Germany said it was prepared to host two former inmates from the Guantanamo prison. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière said the decision had been made for "humanitarian reasons." "I'm not only the federal interior minister, but also a human being and a Christian," the politician, who is a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, said as he announced his decision in July. The decision had been contingent on German states volunteering to take in the former prisoners, who in many instances couldn't return to their countries of origin. Both Hamburg, which is a city-state, and Rhineland-Palatinate agreed.

...In the case of a third prisoner, German officials rejected the request to allow him to be transferred to Germany because the government could not conclusively confirm that he didn't represent any threat or danger, de Maizière said in the summer. The interior minister said Germany did not plan to take in any other Guantanamo prisoners and that the government would respond negatively to any additional requests.

GITMO: Spain probably will shelter 4 Tunisians and a Yemeni

Spanish Ministry of Interior want to be sure that they are not dangerous, before allowing the transportation of these three ex-GITMO. If it's doubtful whether they are or not dangerous, Spain will ask for a change in the sheltered ones.
Basically, the Yemeni prisoner is not dangerous. But for the most part, the Yemeni detained in GITMO are going to be transferred to Saudi Arabia, so maintaining him in Europe is going to be somewhat unusual.
The problem has to do more with the Tunisians, who were a group of 5 troopers from Al-Qaeda, who have travelled from their countries to Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they were doing auxiliary works for the terrorist network and fighting against the Anti-Taliban forces. They did not belong to AQ's hard core. "So it's probable they are now even less important for AQ's structure, as they have been isolated all those years, with no training and no knowledge of what's going on in the world", explains Parag Kanna, author of the book Second World and ex-counsellor of US Special Forces in Afghanistan. "But that doesn't mean they are not dangerous: one thing is to be an unimportant member of the organization and one another not being a hard guy inside the organization".

So everyone was shouting "shut GITMO", but then no one wants the people who were there... Interesting how hypocrites react, eh?
