US: Number of Muslims "thriving" according to statistics

The Land of the Free | The Weekly Standard:
"Some immigrants from the Middle East are Christians escaping persecution... But the vast majority are Muslims. Plausible estimates of the number of Muslims in America vary widely, from 1.3 million to five million. But there is a consensus that Muslim Americans’ share of the population is climbing.

According to a large survey by the American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS), the number of people in America who described themselves as Muslims more than doubled between 1990 and 2008, from 527,000 to 1.35 million.
By other measures, too, American Muslims are thriving. According to the ARIS study, 35 percent of American Muslims age 25 years and older have college degrees, a share equal to or higher than that of any other religion except Judaism and “Eastern religions.” And a Cornell University study found that Muslim Americans generally earn more money than Americans of other religions.
The deeper irony in the ongoing debates over religious liberty and freedom of speech in America is that these debates wouldn’t even be allowed to take place across most of the Muslim world.
A December 2009 Pew Forum survey on religious freedom found that 70 percent of the world lives in areas of high restrictions of religion. Many of those affected are Christians living in Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East.
According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, freedom of religion is defined as the freedom of an individual or community, in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance. No matter how it is defined, religious freedom is not a right enjoyed by most of the approximately 12 to 17 million Christians in the Middle East."
Western countries are so Islamophobic that Muslim immigration is coming towards them, not the other way round. When are we going to start speaking about "non-Muslim-phobia" in the Islamic countries?

Germany: Turkish hackers attack CDU websites

Turkish hackers attack CDU websites - The Local:
Foto: Imago (Msn).
"Police and domestic intelligence agencies are now investigating in both the city-state of Hamburg and the northern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania after CDU officials said their party sites were paralysed overnight when hackers replaced their homepages with a black background featuring a Turkish crest and critical comments.

Hackers “GHoST61” and “Emre Y” had left their mark claiming responsibility for sabotaging the site, with the comment, “Hi Hamburg: We are from Turkey.”

In Hamburg the CDU took its website offline by mid-morning on Tuesday, spokesperson Anna Christina Hinze said.

The Mecklenburg-Western Pomeranian arm of the CDU had a similar experience, discovering that their website had been replaced with an Ottoman Empire crest and some pointed questions about the party’s immigration policies. Their site was repaired by afternoon.

The hackers left a message asking: “Where is the money for integration? Where is the money for mosques?” and “Where is the tolerance? Where is the freedom of religion?“"
Does Turkey pay for non-Muslim temples? That's somewhat strange if we consider that not a week ago Turkish Minister Faruk Çelik called Christians "kuffar". And they have a policy absolutely contrary to, for example, Constantinople's Patriarchy, Turkish nationalists prayed in an ancient Armenian Cathedral and, lastly, there are some questions about Catholic priests murdered in the country, which haven't been addressed.

That is called reciprocity and you can't make others do what you aren't prepared to do yourself.

Turkey: Christians Acquitted of ‘Insulting Turkishness’

"After four years of legal battle in a Turkish court, a judge acquitted two Christians of insulting Turkey and its people by spreading Christianity, but not without slapping them with a hefty fine for a spurious charge.

Four years ago this month, Turan Topal, 50, and Hakan Tastan, 41, started a legal battle after gendarmerie officers produced false witnesses to accuse them of spreading their faith and allegedly “insulting Turkishness, the military and Islam.”

At the Silivri court an hour west of Istanbul, Judge Hayrettin Sevim on Thursday (Oct. 14) acquitted the defendants of two charges that they had insulted the Turkish state (Article 301) and that they had insulted its people (Article 216) by spreading Christianity. Sevim cited lack of evidence.

He found them guilty, however, of collecting information on citizens without permission (Article 135) and sentenced them to seven months of imprisonment each. The court ruled that the two men could each pay a 4,500 lira (US$3,170) fine instead of serving time, said their lawyer Haydar Polat.

At the time of their arrests, Topal and Tastan were volunteers with The Bible Research Center, which has since acquired official association status and is now called The Association for Propagating Knowledge of the Bible. The two men had used contact information that individuals interested in Christianity had volunteered to provide on the association’s website. "

The reason why they were accused of "insulting Turkishness" is based on three witness, identified as Fatih Kose, 23, Alper, 16, and Oguz, 17, claimed the two Christians had called Islam a "primitive and fabricated religion" and had described Turks as a "cursed people."

Egypt: Our friend Mubarak

Egypt Cuts a Deal: Christians Fed to Muslim 'Lions' :: Hudson New York
...Considering the citizenship rights Copts enjoyed in the early-to-mid-20th century, how did things come to this pass? Much of this reversion can be traced to Mubarak's predecessor, Anwar Sadat, who altered Egypt's Constitution — by adding Article 2, "sharia is the principle source of legislation" — only to be rewarded, ironically, with assassination by the Islamist "Frankenstein monster" he had empowered. Since then, there has been a tacit agreement between the government and the Islamists. As Youssef Ibrahim puts it, the agreement "turned over to Islamists control in media, education, and government administrations in return for allowing Mr. Mubarak's rule to go on unchallenged, setting the stage … for his son, Gamal, to succeed him. As part of the deal, [Mubarak] agreed to feed Egypt's Christians to the growing Islamic beast."
The Copts now find themselves in a dire situation. Magdi Khalil, a human rights activist at the forefront of the "Coptic question," states that "Egypt is on the verge of chaos and change of regime, and there is a plan for Copts to pay the price of this predicted chaos, by directing the surplus violence, hate and barbarism towards them." This redirection onto the Copts is obvious even in subtle things: aside from the habitual anti-Copt indoctrination that goes on in mosques — all of the demonstrations occurred immediately after Friday's mosque prayers. Egypt's state-run public education system also marginalizes, if not ostracizes, the Copts (see, for example, Adel Guindy's "The Talibanization of Education in Egypt.")
More obvious proof of the government's complicity is the fact that, not only has it not prevented or dispersed the increasingly rabid demonstrations against the Copts — the way it viciously and unequivocally does whenever any protests are directed against itself — but Egyptian security, as Magdi Khalil affirmed in a phone conversation, actually facilitates, and sometimes participates, in these mass demonstrations. After all, Islamists who publicly call for the death of the Pope do so, writes Ibrahim Eissa, "knowing quite well that State Security will not touch them, since demonstrations are directed against the Pope and not the President, the Church and not the inheritance issue [Gamal Mubarak as successor of his father]. Those who go out in Jihad against 'inheritance,' democracy and election fraud are beaten mercilessly by security forces, but those who go out to incite sectarian violence between Muslims and Christians believe …that they are the friends and 'buddies' of the police and the State Security."

Iran: Pastor’s Wife Released as Husband Faces Execution

Worthy Christian News NEWS ALERT: Iran Releases Pastor’s Wife as Husband Faces Execution:
"The wife of a prominent evangelical pastor in Iran was free Monday, October 18, after four months of detention, but her husband still faced the death penalty for abandoning Islam, the Church of Iran said.
Fatemeh Passandideh, the wife of Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani, was released October 11 by a court in Gilan province, in northern Iran, an official linked to the Church of Iran told Worthy News and its news partner BosNewsLife.
'The release of Fatemeh Passandideh comes ten days after the announcement of the death sentence for her husband Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani,' he said, speaking on earlier agreed conditions of anonymity, amid security concerns.
Pastor Nadarkhani was convicted of 'apostasy', or leaving Islam, last month by the 11th Chamber of the Assize Court of the province of Gilan. The pastor's attorney is expected to file an appeal against the ruling after he reportedly found 'serious procedural flaws' in the case."

Indonesia: Local council shuts down Christian church defying court order

A Christian protestant church, GKI Taman Yasmin in the regency of Bogor, Indonesia was forced to cease activities by Bogor's regency on Sunday night. The police and Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) surrounded the church, disbanded a church meeting, then sealed the building by the city's order.

The Public Order Agency's main purpose is to help the police and local government maintain public order. However, given the rather militaristic and sudden action, some fear the church closing is actually inspired by a broader Islamist campaign against Christians and church groups in the Muslim majority nation. Last week, two church leaders were stabbed in Bekasi Regency, on the eastern border of the capital city, Jakarta.

...The church building permit was first revoked by the Bogor Administrative government on February 14, 2008, two years after the issuance of their permit. The administrative government cited public disturbance as an excuse to close down the place of worship. However, the court of justice overturned the Bogor administration's decision, and the church was reopened August 27 only to be re-closed a few days after.

Hillary Clinton praised Indonesia for the "protection of individuals' professing different religions". Very timely.

Middle East: "International community must take its responsibility to reach an agreement on respect to human dignity", Kirkuk's bishop says

Mgr Louis Sako, archbishop of Kirkuk speaks on Christians in the region:

"There is a danger of the extinction of the Christian community in Iraq and other countries". For these families, the war has been a disaster. Americans are not only responsible for that tragedy, but they are responsible of a stable and peaceful future. They should not leave them behind   and pulling their troops out of Iraq without caring.

In addition, the international assembly is responsible to keep religious and ethnic minorities in their land to continue their presence and uphold their heritage and witness. The lack of planning to stop the mortal exodus that afflicts our community is worrying.

The future of Christians in Iraq, but also in M.E. has one of two ends: Emigration, or to accept to live as a second-class citizen with many difficulties and fears.

The question that requires an urgent and decisive response is, "How can Iraqi Christians be helped?"  We need a strong support from all, with a clear "political" vision and precise plans not only for protecting and encouraging Christians to stay home and to hope, but also for fostering reconciliation among Iraqis, to promote human rights in that area and asking the governments to respect the rules.  Christians have been, and can continue to be today, an instrument of dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and collaboration with our Muslim brothers who are appreciating their qualifications, therefore the migration of Christians from Middle East is a big loss for both.

The international community must take its responsibility and come up with the local authorities to a common agreement to respect the dignity of the human person and its rights based on equality and full citizenship, with partnership commitments and protection. Therefore, it is necessary to make real modification on the Constitutions in order to guarantee the rights of all citizens equally.

The strength of a state should be based on credibility in applying laws equally to all citizens, without discrimination between Muslims and non-Muslims, majority and minority. This is a shame. In The west Muslims community are enjoying full equality and they are not considered a minority or a second-class citizens. In ME were are indigenous and not refugees!

Sudan: Sudanese bishops' conference concerned about persecution if South supports independence

"The secretary general of the Sudanese bishops’ conference is expressing concern that the Church in the northern part of the nation will suffer persecution if the residents of southern Sudan opt for independence in a January 2011 referendum. In addition, “the lives of southern Sudanese in the north are under threat,” said Father Santino Maurino Morokomomo.

Two million lost their lives in the long Sudanese civil war (1983-2005) between the Muslim north and the largely animist and Christian south. The civil war ended when President Omar Hassan Ahmad Al-Bashir, later indicted by the International Criminal Court, granted the south limited autonomy and promised a January 2011 referendum. Since 2005, the nation’s 5.8 million Catholics have fallen under two sets of religion laws. In the north, all schools-- even Christian schools-- must offer instruction in Islam, and converts from Islam to Christianity face not only criminal charges but also death at the hands of their families. In the south, Christians enjoy religious freedom.

15% of Sudan’s 37.2 million people are Catholic, according to Vatican statistics."

Ethiopia: Christian accused of desecrating the Qu'ran

Well, in reality no one knows where he wrote "Jesus is God". His partner apparently accused him of writing it on the Qu'ran. Others say that he wrote it in different places, such as a piece of wood or a minibus.
A Christian in Ethiopia’s southern town of Moyale has been languishing in jail for two months after his Muslim business partner accused him of writing “Jesus is Lord” in a copy of the Quran, local church leaders said.
Compass Direct News (CDN) reports that Tamirat Woldegorgis, a member of the Full Gospel Church in his early 30s, was arrested in early August after the Muslim co-worker in the clothes-making business the two operated out of a rented home discovered Woldegorgis had inscribed “Jesus is Lord” on some cloth, area Christians said.
Compass says the Muslim associate, whose name has not been established, went to a nearby mosque with the accusation that Woldegorgis had written “Jesus is Lord” in the Quran itself, sources said.
Compass reports that angry sheikhs at the mosque subsequently had Woldegorgis arrested for desecrating the book sacred to Islam, they said. Other sources said, however, that Muslims accused Woldegorgis of writing “Jesus is Lord” on a piece of wood, on a minibus and then on the wall of a house.
A church leader who requested anonymity told Compass that two days after Woldegorgis was arrested, two friends inquired about him at the Moyale police station; authorities responded by jailing them for two weeks.
Compass explained that in Ethiopia’s federal state system, each state is autonomous in its administration, and most of those holding government positions in Somali Region Zone Five are Muslims.

Turkey: Nationalist Party holds prayer in Armenian Cathedral

If some people would just think about this when mentioning Córdoba's Cathedral... (Translation: T&P):
The Armenian Apostolic Church on Saturday condemned the holding of a Muslim prayer hundreds of Turkish nationalists organized in an old Armenian cathedral in eastern Turkey with the permission of Turkish authorities. The Nationalist Action Party (MHP opposition) had organized a Friday prayer in congregation in the Cathedral of Our Lady Ani, the ruined capital of a medieval Armenian kingdom located near Kars, near the border with Armenia to Turkey. This ceremony was widely interpreted as a response to mass history allowed for the first time in 95 years by the Turkish authorities on 19 September, the Armenian Church of the Holy Cross, Van (east). It was the first Mass ever celebrated since the massacres and deportations of the First World War.
The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) announced earlier this week its intention to bring together supporters on Friday to a group prayer in the Cathedral of Our Lady and the party won regional authorities and the Ankara government permissions. On August 16th 1064, the Seljuk leader Alparslan Ani won the city and he dropped the cross of the cathedral and said a prayer on Friday. Aktash, who is head of the branch of the party wanted to reproduce the event in Kars after 946 years.According to a previous press release, the president of the nationalist Devlet Bahceli decided to begin the campaign for elections to the parliament with this prayer in the Cathedral on October 1.
The Cathedral of Ani is a pearl of the original architecture of the Caucasus. Ani was the capital of an Armenian kingdom in the Middle Ages, which extended largely on Armenia and eastern Turkey today. The Cathedral was founded by order of King Sembat II and was completed under the patronage of the wife of King Gagik I, Queen Katranide. The Cathedral was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built by the talented architect Tiridates, which was said monuments of the 10th century that they prefigured the Gothic style that came to Europe several centuries later.

Pakistan: Christian lawyer and his entire family killed by Islamic extremists

He wanted to take legal action against a Muslim who was charging a Christian exorbitant interest. Crosswalk:
Islamic extremists killed a Christian lawyer, his wife and their five children in northwestern Pakistan this week for mounting a legal challenge against a Muslim who was charging a Christian exorbitant interest, local sources said.

Police found the bodies of attorney and evangelist Edwin Paul and his family on Tuesday morning (Sept. 28) at their home in Haripur, a small town near Abbotabad in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (previously known as the North-West Frontier Province, or NWFP), according to Haripur Station House Officer (SHO) Maqbool Khan.

The victim and his wife Ruby Paul, along with their five children ages 6 to 17, had been shot to death.

"On Sept. 28 at around 8 a.m., we received a call from Sher Khan colony that people heard gunshots, and there was a group of people who ran from a house and drove away," Khan said. "We went and found seven bodies in a house."

Iraq: Christians continue fleeing to neighbouring countries

Mainly Jordan and Syria, despite the possible crackdown on Christianity (specially evangelical Christianity), feared by Syrian Christians:
A quiet but steady hemorrhaging of Iraq’s ancient Christian presence is underway and little is being doWritten threats, kidnappings, bombings and murder by Muslim extremists are driving thousands of Iraq’s minority Christian population out of their ancestral homeland, fleeing for safety to neighboring Jordan and Syria.ne to stem the flow.

“The Christians are experiencing an absence of leadership,” explained Hala Hikmat, a recent arrival from Baghdad who has joined thousands of her countrymen in Syria. “We have no leaders who are communicating our urgent needs to the authorities, so consequently each person has to take care of themselves.” Their urgent needs, as expressed by Hikmat, are for protection and for a stand to be taken on Christians’ behalf.

A string of church bombings in August and September sent anywhere from 30,000 to 40,000 Christians fleeing the country, according to estimates by Iraqi government and church officials. And they admit that hundreds more families out of Iraq’s 750,000 Christians are leaving each week.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) disputes these figures, saying they are too high. But UNHCR offices in Amman and Damascus admit that it is hard to know exactly how many Iraqi Christians are currently in Jordan and Syria.

Of the 4,000 Iraqi families officially registered as refugees with the agency in Damascus, more than half are Christians. It is believed that there are larger numbers of Iraqis in Syria because it is cheaper to live there than in Jordan. Iraqi Christians also said they have stronger cultural and spiritual ties to Syria. Syrian authorities estimate there are about 300,000 Iraqis in the country.

Syria: Eight House Churches Shut Down

"The Syrian government ordered the closure of numerous 'house churches' for meeting in places the government deems inappropriate for worship. Many congregations in Syria cannot afford to buy a plot of land and build a church, so instead they purchase an apartment and turn it into a place of worship. However, during the past few months, the government has enforced a law stating that congregations must only gather in buildings that resemble a church.
Many Syrian Christians, however, believe that the government's 'legal' excuse for closing churches is merely a cover-up for a wider government crackdown against evangelical Christian activity in Syria. 'Syrian Christians that are active in their faith know that they are watched very closely and the government is waiting for an excuse to crack down on them,' a Syrian Christian told ICC. 'The government is targeting all religious activities which are considered 'extreme' -- from Muslim extremists all the way to Christians… It is generally believed that the government is getting reports from Orthodox and certain denominations as well as secret police and certain Islamic congregations.'"

Morocco: Christian convert serving 15 years for conversion

Nearly five years into the prison sentence of the only Christian in Morocco serving time for his faith, Moroccan Christians and advocates question the harsh measures of the Muslim state toward a man who dared speak openly about Jesus.
By the end of December Jamaa Ait Bakrim, 46, will have been in prison for five years at Morocco’s largest prison, Prison Centrale, in Kenitra. An outspoken Christian convert, Bakrim was sentenced to 15 years prison for “proselytizing” and destroying “the goods of others” in 2005 after burning two defunct utility poles located in front of his private business in a small town in south Morocco.
Advocates and Moroccan Christians said, however, that the severity of his sentence in relation to his misdemeanor shows that authorities were determined to put him behind bars because he persistently spoke about his faith.
“He became a Christian and didn’t keep it to himself,” said a Moroccan Christian and host for Al Hayat Television who goes only by his first name, Rachid, for security reasons. “He shared it with people around him. In Morocco, and this happened to me personally, if you become a Christian you may be persecuted by your family. If you keep it to yourself, no one will bother you. If you share it with anyone else and start speaking about it, that’s another story.”

Pakistan: More on the Christians discrimination on the relief aid

A photographer of Portas Abertas is traveling through Pakistan to report on the flood's disaster. The circumstances are difficult and threatening. "I had to travel by night to the affected area and could only stay there for some hours. I had to go back to a safe city before there was talk of a foreigner in the region".
The photographer visited two villages. "Of course I had heard stories about Christians being overlooked during the relief effort of the government and Islamic organizations. In the first village that was a harsh reality. The town was still flooded with people camped on high ground. The Muslims were in tents nice and firm. Christians were situated a few hundred meters down the road, with makeshift tents made of branches, leaves and grass".

Indonesia: Muslim leader arrested in anti-Christian attack

Indonesian police confirmed that Muharli Barda, the notorious leader of the Islamic Defender Front (FPI) in Bekasi, has been detained for his role in an anti-Christian incident that occurred on 12 September. Police also said that nine other people were involved, but did not disclose their names.
The incident in question occurred last Sunday when a Protestant clergyman, Rev Afian Sihombing, was attacked. He is the head of a Christian community in East Pondonk Bekasi Regency. He is currently in hospital with multiple stab wounds to the stomach. Rev Luspida Simanjutak was also injured during the attack, with wounds to the face, head and back. She and Rev Sihombing lead the Huria Batak Kristen Protestan (HBKP).
After initially taking a guarded position, police became more involved following a statement by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who said that Christians should have justice.
“There are ten suspects,” Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri announced. He declined however to give any further comments.

The Koran was not burned but violence and riots spread throughout Muslim world

Iranian-backed TV broadcasts US Koran desecrations, inflames deadly Kashmir riots; 15 dead:
"The Iranians seized on reports of Koran burnings near Ground Zero and elsewhere in the U.S. to fan deadly riots Monday in mostly-Muslim Kashmir.

Indian forces killed more than a dozen people and wounded scores more rampaging rioters, who chanted 'Down with Koran desecrators' as they attacked a Christian school in one town and government buildings in other cities.

They also chanted 'Down with America' and 'Down with Israel,' cries rarely heard in Kashmir where Muslim rebels have long waged a bloody rebellion against Indian rule.

Pakistan: "Convert to Islam or you're not getting aid", Christians told

Agenzia Fides - ASIA/PAKISTN - Discriminacin en los auxilios: episodios y testimonios:
"There are a lot of cases of humanitarian aid's discrimination about which Agencia Fides has been informed, against Christians, other religious minorities, dalits and weaker. "The general picture of social and religious discrimination in Pakistan is more heinous everyday and is contaminating solidarity made to the country", says a Fides' source. Among victims, rage is growing, and last Thursday, in Hyderabad, a lot of them protested in a march against the mistreatment suffered by religious minorities.
Humanitarian operators and NGOs in Pakistan have told Fides that in Thatta's district, flooded these past days, a lot of Christian families have been denied aid, even from Government's civil servants.
Zubair Masih says: "I come from Sukkur. We have lost everything. We have gone to a camp for victims near Thatta but they haven't let us enter because we are Christians".
Abid Masih, Christian, is living in a camp near Larkana, and says: "My wife is sick, but the doctor doesn't want to visit and cure here and has told us to wait for the Health World Organisation to send Christian doctors".
Aamir Gill, a victim from Dadu, says: "I arrived with my family to a camp near Hyderabad, but the manager didn't want to register us because we are Christians and didn't give us anything. We are obliged to go".
Carl Moeller, president of the American organization "Open Doors", which publishes a report about persecuted Christians around the world, in a note sent to Fides says: "Some Christian victims have been denied aid openly, while others have been invited to go or to convert to Islam. We can imagine the terrible decision: abandoning one's faith to be able to feed your own child".
It's pathetic that we are sending aid to this country without obliging authorities to treat everyone as equals. It's amazing to what extent religious hate can grow...
