Iran: Hossein Derakhsan, aka "Hoder", sentenced to 20 years

There were fears he would be condemned to death. But the sentence is still too hard for just speaking his mind. CNN:
An Iranian court has sentenced the so-called "blogfather" of Iran to 19½ years in prison, the semi-official Mashregh news website said Tuesday.
Hossein Derakhshan was "convicted of cooperating with enemy states, making propaganda against the Islamic system of government, promoting small anti-revolutionary groups, managing obscene web sites and insulting Islamic sanctities," Mashregh reported.
The 35-year-old Canadian-Iranian blogger and activist was also banned from journalistic endeavors and from joining any political parties for five years.
Derakhshan was arrested on November 1, 2008, and is being held at the Evin Prison in Tehran, reported the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran.
Hamed Derakhshan, Hossein Derakhshan's brother, was shocked when he discovered the news of Hossein Derakhshan's sentence from an online news report.
"It targets exactly freedom of speech and expression. Maybe they are trying to make an example of him by giving him a heavy sentence," Hamed Derakhshan told CNN.

Iran: Prosecutor seeks death penalty for famous (and jailed) blogger "Hoder", jailed activists on hunger strike

Crackdown on bloggers and activists continue. After Shiva Nazar Azari was sentenced to 6 years in prison for "moharebeh" or waging war against Allah, now Hoder could be in danger of being sentenced to death. From Global Voices Online:
A reliable source has told Global Voices that Tehran's prosecutor is seeking the death penalty for jailed Iranian blogger Hossein Derakhshan (also known as “Hoder”). The presiding judge, named Salavati, has not yet ruled in the case. Derakhshan has been accused of “collaborating with enemy states, creating propaganda against the Islamic regime, insulting religious sanctity, and creating propaganda for anti-revolutionary groups.” He was arrested 22 months ago, and his trial began in June 2010.
The reasons for Hoder’s initial arrest upon his return to Iran from Canada in 2008 remain unclear, but many speculated that his two (highly publicised) trips to Israel were the primary reason.
Derakhshan holds a Canadian passport, but Iran does not recognize dual citizenship and visiting Israel is frowned upon by the government.

On other news, some political prisoners have gone on hunger strike to protest deteriorating conditions on Evin prison. Three of them, journalists Bahman Ahmadi-Amounei and Keyvon Samimi and student activist Majid Tavakoli began a "dry" hunger strike on August 4. Relatives and bloggers are shocked by the indifference of the rest of the world about their situation.
