Italy: Husband kills wife because she opposed their daughter's arranged marriage

They were Pakistani immigrants. Telegraph:
The daughter, 20-year-old Nosheen Butt, was admitted to hospital with a cranial traumatism and a broken arm after her 19-year-old brother beat her with a stick in the courtyard of their building in Novi, near the north Italy city of Modena.
According to Modena prosecutors' initial findings, the father Ahmad Khan Butt, a 53-year-old construction worker, threw his wife to the ground and beat her with a brick while the brother Umair attacked his sister.
"The victim did not want her daughter to have an unhappy relationship like the one that had been forced on her," said deputy Modena prosecutor Lucia Musti, who is in charge of the investigation.
"The mother and the daughter were on the same side and this could be called a 'cultural' homicide because in addition to domestic violence there is the issue of the traditions that may have motivated the crime," Ms Musti said.
The family's three other children have been taken in by Italian social services.
The Italian political class reacted with indignation at the incident which was highly similar to the cases of a girl of Pakistani origin in 2006 and a Moroccan girl in 2009 who wanted to lead Western lives with Italian boyfriends.
According to Italian portal ADNKronos, the father didn't like his daughter's Western ways and that she had rebelled against his wishes. Among other reactions:

Egypt: Woman strangled with headscarf, thrown into sewer system to clean family honor

The Amereya police deportment in Alexandria arrested three men from the same family and accused them of murdering two of the mens’ sister and dumping the body in the sewage after hearing rumors about her.
The two brothers and the girl’s uncle dragged her in a car along with her three-year-old child and drove to an isolated area where they strangled her with her head scarf in front of her baby, media and police reports stated.
Police said that they stabbed her in the chest and the stomach with a knife to make sure she was dead. Later that night, they dumped the body in the sewer system where it was found and taken to the corner’s office.
The deceased, Karima Metawe, 20, was married to a butcher who works in Libya and her brother and uncle allegedly had heard rumors about her leaving the house and going out, leaving her child behind, so they decided to take her life to ‘restore’ their family’s honor.

Spain: Moroccan man kills sister, tries to hide it by calling emergencies

An honour killing case? Police have found clues that lead to a domestic violence case, though it's too early to know it. We'll wait and see: El Mundo:
A 37-year-old Moroccan man has been arrested on suspicion of killing his 47-year-old sister, at his home in the village of Llano de Brujas (Murcia). She was hit repeatedly with a frying pan in the head during a fight for unknown reasons, informed a spokesman of this body.

The detainee, who is now at Civil Guard HQs at Santomera whose agents are investigating this case, called the emergency phone at 0:50 a.m., apparently worried because his sister didn't open her house's door.

Local police rushed to the scene and, upon entering the house, agents found the woman dead, lying on the ground beside a large pool of blood and a hole in the head. The death has been certified by the physician of the medicalized Emergency Unit.

Apparently, agents have arrested the brother after hearing theneighbour's testimony. Witnesses have said that there was a fight between brothers and the agents have discovered clues that point to a domestic violence case.

West Bank: " I would do it again", says honor killer

Her 23-year-old sister was engaged to marry a Muslim but had an affair with a Christian. Khaled phoned a number she had noted down to discover it was a clinic for restoring women's virginity through surgery. So he "went mad, beat her and smashed her head against the wall". He spent only 6 days in jail and was never charged.
"I don't say that I wish I hadn't killed her, but I say I wish she hadn't done that," he said.
"I am really sorry for what happened, but I think even if I'm in the same situation now after this experience and she does the same thing, I would kill her again."
"It wasn't my fault, and I haven't done anything wrong," he said.
"I overreacted but I don't think that it makes me deserve jail for a long time."

Turkey: honor killing of a 2-year-old girl

IstanbulImage via Wikipedia
The parents weren't married:
Turkish police Friday detained an unmarried mother and six other people near Istanbul for their suspected role in the so-called “honor killing” of a 2-day-old baby girl, state news agency Anatolian said.

The baby was suffocated by her grandmother after the family learned the 25-year-old mother became pregnant out of wedlock, Anatolian said.

“My family decided to kill my baby,” the mother told the police, according to Anatolian. “My 55-year-old mother choked the baby with a cloth. Then, my brothers buried the baby in a hole in the garden and covered the hole with cement.”
Police found the body after receiving an anonymous phone call.

Among those detained were also a doctor and the doctor’s secretary, They allegedly had agreed not to register the baby’s birth in return for an undisclosed amount of money.

The baby’s father is doing his military service and was not involved in the incident.
More here , here and here.

Absolutely terrible. As Incognito says in the link above:
A total innocent, that had no choice in the matter of her birth, killed in cold-blood by her shameful, shame-filled family. A family that could kill a child as easily as if she was a dying dog you shoot to put it out of its misery, and bury in the backyard. Unceremoniously dumped into a hole. It’s unconscionable. Apparently, the murder would have gone undetected had it not been for an anonymous tip to the police.
With actually no remorse. And in Istambul outskirts, not in some "far away" place in Turkish countryside.

Egypt: Two brothers "honor killed" their sister

A young man in Egypt goes to a party seeking drugs and prostitutes, discovers his sister there. He later beats her to death with his younger brother, then stabs and burns her. The brothers were sentenced to a year in jail.
Alliance of Civilizations and gender equality, of course. Specially when the brothers have been sentenced to one year in jail. Just to have an idea of proportions: blogger Abdul Karim Soliman was sentenced to 4 years in prison because he allegedly insulted Islam and Mubarak.

Gaza: women suffer from die-hard custom of "honor killing"

M.M., a 34-year-old male resident of Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in northern Gaza City never regretted the killing of his sister, who he believed had slept with a stranger.
"I protected the honor and dignity of my clan, and now I can walk down the street holding my head high," said the man, who spoke on condition of only using the abbreviation of his name.
Having served three years in prison for the murder, M.M. thought it was a proper price to pay to keep his family's reputation.
His case was ruled as passion killing by the local court and was given a much lighter penalty than first class murders, because it was categorized as "honor killing", in which a woman was murdered by her male relatives, often her father or brothers, for sex outside marriage.
Honor killing is not entirely rare and insular in the Hamas-ruled Gaza strip of 1.5 million population, where Israel's blockage since June 2007 has increased people's poverty as well as ideological isolation.
Seven women were killed by their family members in the name of "honor" in Gaza since the beginning of 2009, while two were killed in 2008, and eight in 2007, according to a report by the Gaza-based Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR).

So for the Chinese agency honor killlings happen thanks to the "Israeli blockage". Even when it's clear that Hamas has been stealing aid supplies to sell them to residents. Even UN halted aid to Gaza after the theft of thousands of tonnes.
The UN Relief and Works agency said it made the decision after Hamas personnel intercepted an aid shipment for the second time this week.
In a statement, the agency said 10 truckloads of flour and rice delivered into Gaza yesterday were taken away by trucks affiliated with the Hamas-run social affairs ministry. Earlier this week, Hamas police took away thousands of blankets and food parcels meant for needy residents.
The blockage has done nothing to the reasons why these girls are savagely killed. That happens throughout the world, whether the interested are rich or poor.
